Demystifying Irritable Bowel Syndrome
If you’ve been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you might have left your doctor’s office feeling more confused than relieved, asking yourself “what does IBS mean?”. Maybe you were expecting answers, only to be told, “It’s just IBS,” with little solutions beyond managing stress and avoiding certain foods. Sound familiar?
As a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, I see this story all the time—women struggling with severe symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and other digestive issues, only to receive a vague IBS label that doesn’t actually explain why they feel this way. Let’s get real about what an IBS diagnosis actually means for your gut health and, more importantly, what you can do about it.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Signs and Symptoms Explained
Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn’t just about having the occasional stomachache or running to the bathroom after a questionable meal. Patients with irritable bowel can experience symptoms that are chronic, constant, unpredictable, and downright exhausting. The most common IBS symptoms include:
- Chronic bloating that makes you look and feel 6 months pregnant by the end of the day.
- Abdominal pain, visceral pain, or cramping that seems to come out of nowhere.
- Constipation (IBS C)and the constant feeling of sluggishness and bricks in your stomach.
- Excessive or smelly gas that makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious.
- Urgent bowel movements and diarrhea (IBS D) where you always need to be near a restroom or that deathly feeling of constant, explosive bowel movements.
- Mixed bowel habits – alternating constipation and diarrhea that makes each day unpredictably miserable.
- Nausea or indigestion that makes eating stressful instead of enjoyable.
These gastrointestinal symptoms don’t just stay in the gut—issues inside your gut also impact your mood, energy, hormones, skin heath, and overall quality of life. But the real problem isn’t IBS itself; it’s the lack of answers behind why your gut is so out of balance in the first place. And not knowing the root cause is preventing you from experience lasting improvements in your digestive health.
Why an Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diagnosis is Useless
Let’s be honest—an IBS diagnosis is basically your doctor’s way of saying, “We don’t really know what’s wrong, but your digestive system is…. irritable.” To diagnose IBS, doctors often rely on symptom presentation and history alone. But the problem with this is that, IBS is simply a label, but it doesn’t tell you anything about what’s actually causing your bowel symptoms.
You might hear things like:
- “Your labs look normal.”
- “It’s just stress.”
- “Try avoiding dairy and gluten.”
- “Take a fiber supplement”
But none of these actually explain why your gut is in distress. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a collection of symptoms, not a root cause. If you’ve been handed this diagnosis without any deeper investigation into your intestinal microbiome, you’re still missing the key to true healing.

Why Most Surface-Level Interventions Don’t Work
Symptom relief vs. fixing the root cause
Many IBS patients are told to try elimination diets, probiotics, or over-the-counter medications like laxatives or antidiarrheals. While these approaches might offer short-term relief, they don’t actually fix what’s wrong under the surface. Here’s why:
- Elimination diets may help reduce dietary triggers and symptoms temporarily, but they don’t address why your gut is reacting to certain foods in the first place. With gut issues, food isn’t the problem, your ability to digest food is the problem. This is why most elimination diets don’t provide long-term relief.
- Trendy supplements that are going viral on Tik Tok aren’t tailored to fit your body’s unique needs.
- Laxatives and anti-diarrheal meds simply mask symptoms instead of addressing the deeper gut dysfunction causing them, and often come with some nasty side effects that can make gut health worse in the long-run.
- Fiber supplements may help initially, but can often make constipation worse over time, can lead to a fiber dependency, and can irritate that digestive tract over time.
- Antibiotics may help to provide short-term relief from bacterial-related symptoms, but often make digestion worse by wiping out beneficial bacteria levels and increase risk for severe infection in the gut.
If you’re stuck in a cycle of trial-and-error, it’s because these band-aid solutions aren’t designed to heal your gut at the root, they’re designed for symptom management and suppression.
What an IBS Diagnosis Really Means: The Real Root Causes
IBS is not normal, and you don’t have to live with it forever, if you don’t want to. IBS is a sign that something is off inside your gut. Instead of just managing symptoms, we need to ask: Why is my gut so out of balance? The truth is that most IBS cases are caused by a functional disorder or imbalance at the metabolic level. Some of the most common root causes I see inside my 1:1 practice include:
- Dysbiosis – An imbalance between beneficial and harmful gut bacteria.
- Gut infections – Parasites, H. pylori, Candida, small intestine bacterial overgrowth, and bacterial infections (like clostridium difficile infection) are common in patients with IBS symptoms.
- Vitamin & mineral deficiencies – Nutrient deficiencies can throw your metabolism – and digestive system – completely out of whack.
- Mold toxicity – Exposure to mold can lead to chronic inflammation and digestive dysfunction.
- Leaky gut (intestinal permeability) – When the gut lining becomes too permeable, it can trigger food sensitivities, inflammation, and immune activation.
- Inflammatory diet & lifestyle – Poor diet choice, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, and chronic stress are always present when there are symptoms in the body.
Without addressing these issues, IBS symptoms will continue to persist—no matter how many foods you cut out or how many trendy supplements you take. That’s why I run functional labs on all of my clients inside my Gut Well program to help uncover these hidden imbalances at the root of chronic digestive distress inside the gastrointestinal tract.
The Long-Term Risk Factors of Poor Gut Microbiome Health
Ignoring IBS or just covering up symptoms can lead to bigger health issues down the road. Poor gut health doesn’t just stay in your digestive system—it impacts your entire body. Here’s what can happen if the root causes of IBS aren’t addressed:
- Hormone imbalances – Your gut and hormones are deeply connected. Chronic gut issues can lead to estrogen dominance, low progesterone, thyroid dysfunction, and adrenal fatigue.
- Chronic inflammation – When you have mucosal inflammation, your immune system stays on high alert, which can contribute to autoimmune conditions and chronic pain disorders.
- Nutrient deficiencies – Malabsorption can lead to low levels of iron, B12, magnesium, and other vital nutrients, causing fatigue, brain fog, and weakened immunity.
- Skin issues – Acne, eczema, and rosacea are often linked to gut imbalances and inflammation.
- Mental health struggles – Anxiety and depression are strongly linked to gut health. An imbalanced gut microbiome can affect neurotransmitter production, leading to brain fog, mood and anxiety disorders.
- Autoimmune conditions – Hashimoto’s, Rheumatoid arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Celiac disease, and other autoimmune conditions are linked to poor gut microbiota.
- Serious health conditions and bowel disorders – such as colon cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), severe IBS, chronic idiopathic constipation, ulcerative colitis, and other functional gastrointestinal disorders.
Fixing your gut health isn’t just about digestion—it’s about whole-body health and long-term well-being. And it’s why almost every symptom requires a deeper look at the gut, regardless if digestive symptoms are present or not.
