If you’re doing all the right things—drinking plenty of water, having a high fiber intake, even trying magnesium—and you’re still not having consistent bowel movements, there’s a lesser-known mineral deficiency that might be to blame.

That mineral is potassium.

How does potassium help constipation? Potassium has so many important functions in addition to keeping your heart healthy and your muscles strong, but potassium also plays a vital role in many important body functions, including hydration and the health of your digestive tract.

Most women with chronic constipation are told to drink more water, eat more dietary fiber, or rely on laxatives and fiber supplements. But these strategies often fail to address the actual cause of the problem. Constipation disorders and fecal impaction can be related to a range of underlying imbalances and dysfunction, not just a lack of fiber, and it’s important to consider root causes. Stool hydration for constipation is a highly misunderstood health concept. What many don’t realize is that hydrating your stools is often a hydration issue at the cellular level, not just a matter of needing more water or eating enough fiber. And that’s where potassium and mineral rebalancing comes in.


What actually hydrates your stool: Potassium or Increasing Water Intake?

Here’s where most people get it wrong: drinking water alone doesn’t actually hydrate your stool—potassium does. Most people think that drinking more and more water is what hydrates and softens the stool, and is the “cure” for constipation. But the truth is that potassium is the mineral that is responsible for pulling water into the colon and maintaining optimal stool water content and forming soft, passable stools. Potassium is what helps your body absorb water.

Without adequate potassium, your colon struggles to hold onto water, resulting in dry, hard, or incomplete bowel movements. You can have adequate fluid intake and drink all the water in the world, but without the right mineral support to retain water, that water will just pass on through, and constipation remains the same.

In fact, drinking excessive amounts of water without replenishing electrolytes—especially potassium—can worsen constipation by:

  • Increasing urination

  • Then, increased potassium loss through excessive urination

  • Potassium loss leads to electrolyte imbalance and drier stools over time

  • All of this can worsen constipation


And it becomes a viscous cycle of drinking more and more water while getting more and more constipated. Many constipated sufferers who drink excessive amounts of water may benefit to decrease their water intake and increase potassium in their diet instead.

To make matters worse, many commonly used laxatives and stool softeners like Miralax, Dulcolax, polyethylene glycol products (or even magnesium oxide and magnesium hydroxide products) can further deplete potassium, leading to even more electrolyte imbalance and digestive sluggishness down the line.

Most Women Aren’t Getting Enough Potassium

The optimal daily potassium intake is between 3,500–5,000 mg, but the average intake for most women in the U.S. is closer to 1,000 mg per day. That’s less than half of what the body needs for proper hydration, metabolism, and nerve signaling.


What about potassium supplements?

You might be wondering if potassium supplements are the answer to obtaining optimal potassium levels, and to some extent they can be helpful, but they aren’t the golden ticket to solving low potassium levels.

One of the issues with potassium supplements is that you can only safely take around 100–300 mg, up to 3 times per day — which adds up to maybe 900 mg total. That’s still far below the 3,500 mg minimum.

The other issue is that high doses of potassium in isolated, supplement form can: irritate the stomach lining, buffer stomach acid, and disrupt electrolyte balance by throwing off sodium, magnesium, and calcium levels.

That’s why food-based potassium is the safest and most effective option—it’s well absorbed, easy on the gut, and comes packaged with co-factors and other nutrients your body needs to properly metabolize the mineral.


The Best Potassium-Rich Foods to Support Healthy Bowel Movements

If you suspect your potassium is low, focus on eating more foods that provide adequate amounts of this essential nutrient. Here’s a rough breakdown of some of the some potassium-rich whole food options to add to your diet. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it gives you a general idea of what to aim for — and how much potassium-rich food you need daily (optimal intake is 3500mg – 5000mg):

How Low Potassium Affects the Whole Body: Signs & Symptoms

While constipation is one of the most obvious symptoms of potassium deficiency, it’s rarely the only one. Potassium isn’t just important for gut motility & hydration—it supports cellular hydration, nerve conduction, hormone function, and cardiovascular health. When potassium is low, it can lead to a cascade of symptoms, health issues, and cellular dysfunction in the entire body.

Other symptoms and signs of low potassium may include:

  • Bloating and slow digestion

  • Fatigue or sluggish metabolism

  • Low thyroid function

  • Blood sugar crashes or cravings

  • Irregular heartbeat or palpitations

  • Heart palpitations

  • Irregular heart rhythm

  • Nausea

  • Muscle weakness or cramps

  • Skin flare-ups or dryness

  • Water retention or puffiness

  • High blood pressure


Very low levels (severe hypokalemia) or high levels (severe hyperkalemia) can be life-threatening, leading to severe symptoms such as muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and other symptoms. Severe hypokalemia and severe hyperkalemia (as with chronic kidney disease) levels require prompt treatment and medical attention to prevent serious complications. If you experience any of these symptoms, appropriate treatment should be guided by a healthcare professional.


Testing Potassium Levels: Why Blood Tests Miss the Mark

A common question around this topic is, “I have constipation and symptoms of low potassium, but my bloodwork showed my potassium levels are normal?”

A simple blood test from your healthcare provider or doctor is commonly used to check for low potassium levels and electrolyte imbalance. However, the problem is that potassium is 99% stored inside your cells, not in the blood. Blood remains outside the cells and tissues in the body, so blood tests only measure the potassium that is circulating outside the cells. Blood is also homeostatic, so it has the ability to balance itself in essential minerals at the expense of cell & tissue reserves.

This means that blood tests can appear normal when a cellular deficiency is present. Minerals involved in cellular production may appear to be normal in the blood, but may be significantly deficient or out of balance within the cells & tissues → it is this deficiency within the cells that is related to most problems & symptoms because energy production occurs inside the cells and tissues of the body.

In fact, if potassium appears in high levels on a blood test, it may even mean you’re losing it from your cells because your blood is requiring higher amounts and pulling potassium from your tissues—something that can be easily misinterpreted. And as a result, your healthcare professional might tell you to avoid potassium when you actually need more.


HTMA Testing for Cellular Potassium Levels

That’s why I always run a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) on my clients. It gives a deeper, more accurate picture of how your body is storing and using minerals at the tissue and cellular level. HTMA can reveal patterns of chronic depletion, stress imbalances, and mineral ratios that affect digestion, hormones, and energy.

It’s important to look at mineral status as a whole, because minerals have intricate relationships with one another – either synergistically or antagonistically. So an excess of one mineral can cause a depletion, or support balancing, of another mineral. For example, high calcium can drive low levels of potassium. Minerals work in tandem, not in isolation which is why it’s important to look at the full picture.

What I have found inside my 1:1 practice is that the vast majority of my chronically constipated clients show extremely depleted and low levels potassium on their HTMA results — despite having “normal” potassium levels on their bloodwork from their doctor. Given potassium’s role in hydrating stools and supporting gut motility, it’s not surprising that this is a common pattern I see with my constipated clients. While low potassium isn’t the only underlying imbalance contributing to their constipation, it’s a significant contributor that can’t be ignored.

Potassium is not the only root cause for Constipation disorders

It’s important to know that constipation is rarely caused by just one thing. Increasing potassium alone might not fully correct your chronic constipation, but chances are low potassium could be a significant contributor, especially if you experience dry, hard stools.

Increasing potassium through real, whole foods is an easy place to start. And for many of my clients who experience chronically low cellular potassium, this step alone can make a huge difference in their digestion and overall energy levels and. mood.

Of course, potassium isn’t the only underlying driver behind chronic constipation. Other root causes I commonly see inside my 1:1 practice include:

  • Gut infections or dysbiosis

  • Mold

  • Candida overgrowth

  • B vitamin deficiencies

  • Magnesium & sodium deficiency

  • Thyroid dysfunction

  • Nervous system dysregulation

  • Poor bile flow or sluggish liver detox


That’s why a root-cause approach—backed by real data from functional lab testing—can make all the difference when nothing else seems to work.
