Tired of being told your labs are “normal” while your annoying gut symptoms persist?

If you’ve ever left a doctor’s office feeling frustrated, dismissed, or confused after hearing, “Your labs look normal,” you’re not alone. Many women I work with have been dealing with bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, trouble digesting certain foods, and other unpredictable digestive issues for months—sometimes even years—without ever getting any real answers from their doctors. It’s exhausting to hear that nothing is “technically wrong” when you know, deep down in your gut (pun not intended), that something is off.

Traditional lab work is often limited in what it can detect, especially when it comes to complex gut health issues like IBS. Most conventional tests are designed to catch serious diseases or conditions, not to explore the deeper functional imbalances that lead to chronic digestive symptoms. That’s where functional lab testing comes in (so you can find the right labs for IBS).

Functional labs dig deeper. Instead of just looking for overt disease, these tests dig deeper to explore the root causes of your symptoms. They examine how your body is functioning on a cellular level, uncovering imbalances that often go unnoticed in standard medical tests. In my 1:1 Gut Well program, functional labs are the foundation of how I help clients identify the hidden triggers behind their gut issues and create personalized healing plans.

In this post, I’m going to walk you through the top five functional labs I use in my practice to help clients get real answers—and real relief—from chronic gut issues like IBS.

Top Functional labs for Uncovering the Root Cause of IBS & Chronic Gut Issues

And evidence based method for identifying the root cause

Chronic digestive symptoms are not because your bowels are spontaneously “irritable”, they are caused by serious imbalances inside your gut and with your overall metabolic health. That’s why an IBS diagnosis doesn’t provide enough information as to what’s actually causing your chronic symptoms and other health problems.

Whether it’s abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, fatigue, brain fog, or any other chronic symptom, it’s a sign that your body is out of balance, and you need to dig deeper.

Because when you have passed your doctor or healthcare provider’s physical exam, upper endoscopy, blood tests, and other tests with flying colors – yet you’re still suffering from daily symptoms, it’s a sign you would benefit from functional labs to take a deeper look into your digestive system.

1. Comprehensive Stool Testing (GI-MAP) – Your Gut Microbiota Report Card

Imagine trying to fix a car without looking under the hood. That’s what trying to heal your gut is like without a comprehensive stool test. The GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) is my go-to test because it provides a detailed look at what’s going wrong in your gut microbiome.

This test analyzes the DNA of your gut bacteria to detect imbalances and infections that may be at the root of your irregular bowel movements and other symptoms. It identifies things like:

  • Dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria)
  • Bacterial infections & overgrowth
  • Parasites and pathogens
  • H. pylori (a bacteria that can cause ulcers and severe bloating)
  • Yeast and candida overgrowth
  • Markers for intestinal inflammation and fecal calprotectin
  • Immune function
  • Damage to the intestinal lining
  • Gluten sensitivity markers
  • Detoxification capacity

For example, I worked with a client who was experiencing constant bloating, brain fog, and random skin breakouts. Her GI-MAP test revealed a high level of H. pylori and significant dysbiosis—despite her regular doctor telling her everything was “normal.” With the right plan, we tackled these infections, and her symptoms dramatically improved within weeks.

If you’re dealing with IBS, chronic bloating, or unexplained digestive issues, chances are the GI-MAP can uncover crucial pieces of your healing puzzle that are necessary to relieve symptoms.

2. Organic Acids Test (OAT) – Uncovering Metabolic and Gut Imbalances Beyond the Basics

While the GI-MAP focuses on your gut bacteria, the Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive snapshot of your metabolism, intestinal microbiota, detox pathways, and nutrient status. It’s like getting a roadmap to how your body processes food, manages energy, handles toxins, and identifies digestive disorders.

The OAT uses a simple urine sample to measure metabolites—compounds that reveal how well your body is functioning. It can detect:

  • Candida, yeast, and mold overgrowth
  • Nutrient deficiencies (like B vitamins, which are essential for energy and mood)
  • Carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism issues
  • Neurotransmitter imbalances (which can contribute to anxiety, brain fog, and other symptoms)
  • Bacterial imbalances in the gut
  • Weight loss resistance

One client came to me with years of food sensitivities, fatigue, and IBS symptoms that no doctor could figure out. Her OAT results showed severe mold toxicity and poor detoxification. With targeted detox support and gut healing strategies, her energy returned, her digestion improved, and her brain fog lifted. Why it matters: If you’re stuck in an endless cycle of symptom management without real progress, the OAT can reveal hidden factors that are keeping you stuck.

3. **Lactulose Breath Test** – Is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Sabotaging Your Gut?

Do you feel like you blow up like a balloon after eating certain foods like garlic, onions, or high-FODMAP foods? Does your stomach bloat after even “healthy” meals? This could be a sign of SIBO—Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.

SIBO happens when bacteria that should live in your large intestine migrate to your small intestine, where they ferment your food and produce gas in the gastrointestinal tract. This often leads to:

  • Bloating (often worse after meals)
  • Gas
  • Constipation (linked to methane-producing bacteria)
  • Diarrhea (linked to hydrogen-producing bacteria)
  • Food sensitivities

The SIBO breath test measures hydrogen and methane gas levels over a 3-hour period after you drink a special solution. Elevated levels indicate SIBO. Methane and hydrogen breath tests can be particularly useful for identifying subtypes of IBS. Methane-dominant SIBO is usually correlated with constipation predominant IBS (IBS-C), hydrogen dominant SIBO is usually associated with diarrhea predominant IBS (IBS-D), and alternating constipation/diarrhea (IBS-M) is associated with elevations in both hydrogen & methane gases.

While SIBO can be a standalone issue, I often find it co-occurs with other gut imbalances like H. pylori, candida, or mold—making comprehensive testing essential. Treating SIBO without addressing underlying issues is like mopping up water without fixing the leaky pipe.

4. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) – Your Body’s Mineral Blueprint

You may not think minerals are a big deal—but they’re the spark plugs of your body. Without the right balance of minerals, your cells can’t produce energy, your hormones become imbalanced, and your digestion suffers.

The HTMA test uses a hair sample to measure mineral levels and toxic heavy metals. It provides insight into how your body manages stress, metabolizes nutrients, and detoxifies. Common and severe symptoms of mineral imbalances include:

  • Fatigue and burnout
  • Anxiety and mood swings
  • Cravings for sugar or salt
  • Constipation and abdominal bloating
  • Brain fog
  • Hormonal imbalances

I’ve seen clients whose HTMA results showed depleted minerals and high levels of heavy metals like mercury and aluminum. Once we replenished their minerals and supported detox, their energy improved, digestion normalized, and mood stabilized. Bottom line: If you’ve been feeling run down with no clear reason why, your mineral balance could be the missing link.

5. Mycotoxin Testing – Could Mold Be Sabotaging Your Gut Health?

Mold exposure is more common than you might think—especially if you’ve lived in a water-damaged home, worked in an old building, or eaten foods stored in damp conditions. Mold toxins (mycotoxins) can wreak havoc on your immune system, gut health, and detox pathways. It’s important to evaluate because mold toxicity presents increased risk factors for serious health problems and can pose a significant impact to your overall health.

Symptoms of mold toxicity often overlap with IBS and other gut issues:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Digestive problems & bowel disorders
  • Sinus congestion
  • Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Hormonal disruption
  • Neurological symptoms like anxiety & depression

One of my clients had been struggling with IBS for years. Her mycotoxin test revealed high levels of mold toxins—something no previous doctor had investigated. Once we addressed the mold exposure, her gut symptoms finally improved. If you’ve tried everything for your gut and nothing’s worked, mold toxicity could be the culprit.

LAB TEST FAQs

1. What if my doctor’s tests come back normal but I still have symptoms?

Traditional labs often miss underlying issues that functional tests can reveal. If your doctor’s tests are normal but you’re still struggling with symptoms, other tests like the GI-MAP, Organic Acids Test, or SIBO Breath Test can uncover hidden imbalances that might be at the root of your digestive problems.

2. Are there certain risk factors that make IBS symptoms worse?

Yes, certain risk factors can worsen IBS symptoms, including chronic stress, gut infections, hormonal changes, and a history of food poisoning. Identifying and addressing these triggers is a key part of the healing process. Working with a practitioner can help you develop a plan tailored to your needs.

3. Can IBS symptoms be confused with celiac disease?

Yes, the symptoms of IBS and celiac disease often overlap, including bloating, diarrhea, and fatigue. However, celiac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten. A blood test and small intestine biopsy are typically used to diagnose celiac disease.

4. How do I know if my symptoms are IBS or something more serious like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)?

While IBS and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can have similar symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, and constipation, they are different conditions. IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, involves chronic inflammation that can damage the digestive tract. If you’re an IBS patient and experiencing alarming symptoms like blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent vomiting, you should see your doctor right away for other tests to rule out IBD or colon cancer.

4. How is lactose intolerance different from IBS?

Lactose intolerance occurs when your body can’t properly digest lactose, a sugar found in dairy products, leading to bloating, gas, and diarrhea—symptoms similar to IBS. Lactose intolerance can be hereditary — or it can be caused by underlying imbalances found on functional lab tests. Clinical trials have found that lactose intolerance can sometimes be reversed when these underlying issues are corrected.
